Dealers use this "line" to put blame on the owner when they have no other explanation that they are happy with.
OK, let me add: If you did an "unintended" downshift like this, can you be sure you only took the engine as far as the limiter? There is no indication of much further beyond 9000 rpm you may have gone. I have been in contact with another "owner" by PM lately, he over-revved and 8 out of 16 valves are bent. He has yet to determine if any pistons are damaged. Over-revving should not be taken lightly, even if it was 4 months ago.

Have you checked your oil level? I realize you havnt changed your oil in 3k but have you added any since your last change? The car will get noticeably louder when your low on oil.

I would suggest as follows:

1. If you do not notice a performance change- ignore the noice unless it gets louder

2. If you have noticed a performance decline, perfrom a cylinder comp test. You should know from the test if anything is malfunctioning.

I agree, you better to be sorry now than latter. As most of us only have minimal experience with the S, I think you should check it out. Try and make the dealer perform the comp. test and don't let then just dismiss the problem by just listening to the noise. Please update us with what the dealer says.

Mine has a similar noise, but my dealership told me not to worry about it and only to bring it back if it gets worse. i wish they would have told me that it was just normal valvetrain noise.
I too have overreved the engine once. Redlined 3rd and sliped into second instead of 4th. This was 6 months ago.

Well from what I gather, if you bent a valve or damaged the engine then you would experience a decrease in performance and also you would get a check engine light. Does the check engine light come all the time? or are there some cases in which the check engine light didn't come on yet the valves were bent or damage was done to the engine? Thanks

All you need to do is an compression check. If there is on valve bent it will not seal proper and you lose some compression on one cylinder. If the compression on all cylinder identical it is fine and you have to look somewhere else.
