Default Engine Management System?

Anyone know if there is an engine management system out there for the S2000? I have looked on Hondata.com and it says that the F20 and F22 are not upgradeable with their system? I have a Apexi VFAC but have absolutely NO idea what im doing and cant find any threads so I have to wait for a preformance shop to install it for a couple hundred bucks.

0 yrs & 0 days. Invest some effort in searching & researching before posting, please.

There are lots of engine management options available for an '03, but Hondata is not one of them. Also, if you're not comfortable tuning a VAFC, then you definitely won't want to try your hand with any others.

But, just to help you with your investigation, try searching for:
"Apexi VAFC" <-- what you already have (or VAFC2 for a newer version)
"Greddy eManage"
"AEM EMS"

Also, because I love this smiley:

The Under the Hood FAQ has a whole section dedicated to Engine Management.

Actually I have been looking up tech questions and info on this site for a few weeks just never registered. But on that note to generalize my question is the VFAC a form of engine management? If so will i mess anything up by just plugging it in and playing around? I dont want to mess anything up but at the same time I want to learn how to use it.... the manual I have also doesnt list my car in the applications but I was told that it follows the same wiring guidliness of the Accord or something like that.....???

EMS? It really depends on what you plan on doing with the car and what year S2000 you have. Since you have 2003 in your profile, I will assume that.

PIppgy Backs
VAFC
e-Manage
e-Manage Ultimate

Standalones
AME EMS
Hondata KPro (new, will be relased 5/1/07)
And any other EMS you can think of can be installed and used. It will just require wiring modifications.

I suspect this is answered in one of the threads linked from the FAQ, but I'll bite anyway.

It's "sort-of" engine management. It's a piggy back computer that gives false readings to the ECU so that the ECU will compensate. I believe it changes the readings provided by the O2 sensor(s) and/or MAP sensor. This will cause the engine to run richer or leaner, depending on how you have the settings adjusted.

Yes, you can damage your engine using a VAFC. For example, if you set it to run too lean, you can cause detonation which will lead to engine damage. If you set it to run too rich, you can foul your plugs.

The only way to properly tune a VAFC (or any sort of engine management system) is on a dyno w/ a wideband O2 sensor.

Also, regarding your comment on the installation... I'm pretty sure there is a wiring diagram in one of the threads linked from the FAQ. And there's probably also mention of places where you can buy a plug & play harness so you don't have to splice into your factory wiring.

go get you a wideband first or do the tune in dyno.

that's where most people go wrong, doing "butt dyno".

just because it feels like it's going faster, that doesn't mean it's going faster.

VAFC controls the vtec and air and fuel. You need to just read how vtech is tuned in general. Nobody could tell you how exactly, every car is different and if people could tell you here in detail what you should do, they'll be out of business tuning cars.

Just remember, if you decide to go standalone, you'll lose your OBD II port, which means, no emissions pass.
