Engine mounts
Hi Guys,
I am running a 2008 AP2 with about 33,000 km (20,000 miles).
About 4-5 years ago, a workshop told me that the engine mounts were worn and had to be changed. I have been driving the car and nothing bad has happened since. I didn't know whether what the workshop told me was reliable hence I did not change.
My questions are:
1. How do I know when it's time to change engine mounts?
2. On the average how long do the OEM mounts last?
Many thanks!!

Inspect them for cracks, if you cannot see any and are not having any odd vibrations from the front of the car then you should be fine. It is pretty noticeable when they have failed. How long they last varies, but they tend to fail relatively early compared to what you would expect out of engine mounts. I've seen some people with at least one failed as early as 50K miles.
+1 with Fokker on inspecting them for cracks. Weathering will look similar to the weathering/cracking on tires.
I'm not sure if the bushings are hydro filled like on the AP1s, though; so looking to see if there are signs of seepage might not apply.

AP1 and AP2 mounts are the same.

I recently changed my engine mounts at 109k miles and they were not torn at all. It's a case-by-case kind of thing so you need to check for yourself.

it's very easy to tell when the engine mounts are toasted because there will be orange fluid leaks all over it (if fresh) or dried brown streaks (if leak is old). The top part of the mount will be separated from the bottom part, but it might not be readily noticeable. just check for the fluid leaks. same goes for the rear diff mounts.
