Default engine oil cap?

i was wondering, is it possible for the engine oil cap to just fall off?
i was going to change my oil today, but when i opened the hood the oil cap was gone. I remember that this happened 3 times before, the cap was always loose...sometimes it was just kept there because of the hood. but i never thought of it to be anything, i always thought that it was just someone forgetting to tighten it. lately i have been using the a/c in my car and it keeped smelling, now i know i guess it was because of the oil cap.
now i have to order a new cap, any ideas how much its going to cause?
has this happened to anyone?

Yes It's happened to several people. Your oil cap is probably right now jammed down in between the bellhousing and the frame. If it is, you'll notice it in your shifter.

Put it up on a hoist and you'll find it. It was probably left loose the last time it was opened. I hope your oil level stayed up.

good luck

And the car did not spew all the oil out and create large plumes of smoke while you were driving?

The problem is the little gasket underneat the cap is probably one upside down. Mine came loose as well.

Do a search, there are threads that can document it in all it's glorious detail.

its funny that someone posted about this. this happened to me a couple days ago. i was driving up to the gate at base, started smelling some funky stuff, engine got a tad bit louder around 3k. after i passed the gate, i heard this horrible clanking/tapping noise, i was freaking out...i seriously thought it was some rod knock, or some other engine failure. got out, and of course, the cap was off, sitting behind the engine, a tad bit of oil came out, but not much. also, i NEVER forget to tighten my cap, this was definitley a freak accident.
