Default Engine Problems

Well,
For once I decided to drive the S to work today right. I got on the interstate and was traveling up about 2 miles when the CEL came on and noticed a total loss of power. I took it out of gear and it dropped down a stable idle, but would not rev past 2000. When I put the car in gear to even drive, nothing there. I pulled over off of the interstate and just let it sit there for a second. The idle was completely normal, nothing suspicious or odd. It sounded just like it always does. The car still would not rev. It reminded me of like on older cars when you get the distributor wet, and it wont rev. It was like that. Anyways, I shut off the motor for further investigation. The oil level was normal, and fresh Mobil 1. All other fluid levels are normal. I thought to myself, okay, lets start up. Well it never again cranked up. Twice it sputtered like it was flooded, but after those two times, it cranks like it has either no fuel or no fire, meaning that it's just turning, not even attempting to fire.

Now the first thing that comes to mind is the gas. I say this because I had just filled up 30 miles prior, and the previous tank was on 2 bars. This time I filled up at a different gas station that I had never used. My dealer strongly suspects, as I do, that there's water in the fuel.

When the CEL first came on, there was no knocking, no mechanical sounds to indicate engine failure. I really dont think it's that at all. As I said, it was idling completely normal. I guess I will find out something today, as it was towed in to my Honda dealer. I just hope that it's something simple, not major mechanical failure. Any suggestions on what it might be?

Chris

Sounds like you lost fuel pressure- I know this used to be a sign of a failing pump (at least with Chrysler). The pump would get real weak and you could idle but not take off. Also a symptom of very low fuel- enough to keep it running but not enough to go anywhere.

Hopefully the dealer will sort it out.

Chris, how old is your car and how many miles does it have?

I sure hope it is something simple like the fuel pump. Keep us posted.

Chris, I have to agree with the consensus that you either lost fuel pressure or blocked the fuel line -- or worse, got dirty gas from the bottom of the tank and fouled your injectors. No expensive noises, right?

Alright one other possibility, just a whim but was your gas cap screwed on tight? I had a similar problem with my R Acura, light and all, wouldn't run. My son filled it up and didn't click the cap enough and I had to go get him along the side of the road about a mile later.

Now if your engine is fried and all, can I have your cams???? (joke - this doesn't sound like a catastrophe). Best luck, David
