Default engine wouldnt rev

i was driving in the rain today and we going through some deepish water and out of nowhere my engine wouldnt rev. i pulled over and checked under my hood to see if water got into my air box but everything on top was dry. the engine was popping like crazy when ever i tried to rev it up to move. as soon as i put it in gear it would not move at all. at idle it was fine. after about 10 minutes it started running like nothing ever happened. the reason im asking is because maybe once a week it will do the same thing but only in first gear for less than 5 seconds and onces i get into 2nd gear the problem goes away. i really wish i had recorded the sound but i was kind of freaking out because it went on so long.

Did the cel come on? What was the code?

It sounds like a misfire, like something electrical that got wet, etc.

I would have been turning the car off after just a few seconds of a noise like that. Hopefully it isn't anything damaging.

If it is only doing this in first gear, it seems like it would be transmission related.

I would expect a severe misfire like that to trigger a CEL. Was the engine shaking/vibrating during this incident as well?

Well it didn't give me a CEL and it was running kind of rough. If anything I would say that it was a misfiring problem. Like I said it does this even when it's dry but nowhere near as long.
