Default Engine stalling during hard braking

Hi guys,

On Saturday I went to a high speed autocross and experienced a weird issue. The engine stalled a few times on the same corner. First time it happened I couldn't recover and spun out since the ABS and powersteering were not working...

I noticed that the dashboard turned dark for a second and have it on video : http://youtu.be/5PUlbmJM-4I?t=1m5s look at the dashboard @ 1:16

Any thoughts why is this happening? The engine, ecu, and wires are completely stock.

looks like you are in 4th gear and on the throttle at 1:16 in that video. maybe just hitting the rev limiter...? i usually hit the rev limiter once or twice each track day and it feels like it shuts off for a sec.

The rev limiter on 4th gear is much higher than 102 mph. At 1:16 I step on the brake hard just before it turns off. Also you can see the immobilizer and maintenance lights coming on briefly, just like when you start the car.

The first time it stalled on that same corner it didn't start right away and I spun out, unfortunately I don't have it on video.

Weird... Sorry I can't help you, but definitely an interesting problem that should be taken care of ASAP. It would be terrible if this caused an accident.

yeah, definitely sounds hairy! would freak me out if it happened in the middle of a lap. so is it the moment you hit the brake or as you are rapidly slowing down that the engine stalls? i guess then when you shift down to third and let the clutch out the engine started again...?

from your video and the gauge's behavior, it looked like your car completely lost electrical power for a moment and it came back on right after turning everything on. it definitely doesn't seem like your motor stalled, as with stalling the motor, gauges never turns off then turn back on, you only get more lights that goes on indicating you stalled. so it seems like the car just lost power, then quickly regained power. since the car had no power, power steering went out. i'm not too sure what year is ur s, but for mine (MY05) i have power steering without the motor being running because it's an electrical system. i just have to have the key turned to "on".

do you happens to have a lot of keys on the same keychain as your s2000 key on the daily basis? this happened to my friend before with his prelude. he had this 5 lbs of keys/keychains and his car would shut of randomly on the freeway then turn back on, and it turns out his ignition was giving a bad contact and the culprit of that was his 5 lbs of keychains. i'm not sure if that's the same issue you may be experiencing, but it's definitely worth taking a look at...

good luck man.

Yes, when I hit the brake the engine stalls or just loses electrical power and then it came back a second later. When it stalled the clutch was not pressed yet so the engine was still spinning. It must be electrical problem. Thanks

The car is 2002 AP1, yes it seems like it is losing electrical power. On my keychain I have only the remote and I checked if my knee can push the key or the remote which could cause this but no. I have low bucket seats and it is impossible to push the key with my knee.

Thanks for your help

I have to figure it out before the next event on 9/15

well, for my friend it was the torque of his 5 lbs of keys that caused the ignition to fail. and since that is not the case for you, i hope it's something else like what the other guy said... battery moving around...

good luck man!
