Its either the t-stat or the engine temp sensor!

so would you say the eng temp sensor is bad?

my temp gauge shows normal reading then turns off. then comes back on randomly to temperature.

I dont think it would, sounds like a tstat to me, happened to me on my civic. Have you overheated for some reason recently possibly causing the tstat to become damaged?
