Default Eps Light Flashed On And Off While Driving

is this a problem or should I not worry about it. It flashed on and off a few times but after awhile it didn't come back on at all. I am not going to worry about unless someone here says I should

It is your power steering and the light should not come on. It is your choice if you want to go see the dealer though.

Keith, I had something come up similar to that right after engine start-up about a year ago. Steering wheel was very heavy but maybe still some power assist.
Talked to Kent S. (woodwork) and he had heard of one other weird deal like that but that was all.
It's never done it again since

Now the S4's power steering is another story. Is yours OK?

I'd take it in if it started happening regularly. A once-in-a-blue moon EPS error is no big deal. The system is fairly complicated for safety reasons and things like a voltage spike or unexpectedly fast wheel movement (like maybe bump steer) can fault it.

It could have been as simple as an overheated EPS motor (or faulty temp reading). Our S2K's have a built-in power assist cutback to cool down the motor in that event. I haven't noticed it at hard Auto-X but I it should engage during so-called concentrated steering exercises.

I do engineering on EPS sensors and I can tell you they are usually the weak link. EPS is rare in the US but getting more common in Europe. I guess they are less legally sensitive to having a car steer you into a tree against your will. Yep, that would be a serious EPS failure and it is always a possibility, though hard to set up just the right sequence of errors...

I'm glad this thread came up now. It just happened to me tonight. I pulled out of a parking stall and noticed that the steering was heavy, then I looked at the instrument panel and noticed the EPS light. I was only a few blocks from home so I drove on. When I got home, I turned off my engine and re-started. This time the EPS light didn't stay on. This is the first time I've had any problem with the car, but I've only had it 3 months. Hopefully, it won't be a re-occurring thing.Ï

Can anyone report on just how heavy the steering is w/o EPS?

Anyone care to discuss how to make the steering heavier, but bearable? I'm not sure if it's the weight/balance that makes the steering light at high speeds, but it's much lighter than what I'm used to (and would like it to be).
