Default Funny oil.....

I've searched and found that Mobile 1 is amongst one of the reccommended oils on this board.... but something interesting about my use of it.

The car originally had regular oil, and when I changed to the Mobile 1, I noticed a bit of noise.

When I start the car, there is almost a dull gurrgle, or dim rattle until the car has reached O/T. It never did this with the old oil, or that I noticed, which I assume I would have. Any ideas? I am half tempted to get rid of the Mobile 1, as it has me running a bit scared.

When I purchased the car, the first thing I did, was fire it up (from cold) and shove my head under the hood, and listen to the motor, as well as feel it. I repeated this same step once up to full temperature. The car purrrred when it was cold, and purred when it was warm. Then.... change the oil, and now it has a new sound. Makes me a little leary. Dipstick is reading that it is topped up, so not a low oil deal.

I also had the thought of maybe a bad idler bearing, that just had the timing of the oil change to rear its head? The car only has 27,000km on the clock.

Any ideas, or commonality with anyone else?

Thanks in advance!!

It's been said in the oil journals that the car likes drinking the mobil1 a little more than other oils. I still use it, Syn at least.Oil Journals - Lots of Reading

Also Read Here and listen to the sound clip provided to see if your noise sounds similar to this. by your description it's unlikely but always a possibility since you have recently changed to a new brand of oil.

I switched to Mobil 1 at 10k miles and never had any oil-related problems. I've also only burned about 1/4 of a quart in 25k miles.

Did you use 10W30 or something similar?

Uploading the video, will take a little bit, but will link to it when its ready. My Helm manual doesnt really get into details about installing/removing TCT. All they say is to remove the cover, and thread a bolt into it to compress it. Then remove. I read the DIY from super honda or whatever, and they say to just pull it, and then access the cotterpin through the access hole. I DONT like either! There is a risk of dropping parts into the motor on the removal, and on the install. Is there a better way to do this, or am I interpereting it all wrong? NVMY4N, I assume you have done this before? Can you explain how you did it?

Thanks!

I always thought that M1 10w-30 was a bit thin. Their 5w-30 is a little thicker at 100C 11.3 vs 10.0 for the 10w-30. I personally like their M1 HM 10w-30 oil, that is what I use in my S and don't have any problems with it at all. I think that you hear a little more noise with the thinner oil you are using. Try switching to something a little thicker at your next OCI and see if it changes the sound. Does Honda recommend 5w-40 for the 2.2?

Here is the video..... be patient, and listen closely to the whole video. This was an HD camcorder will killer sound, but when you downsize it and then upload..... you lose subtle details... and some detail in the sound. Screw the video for this one.

Video of possible TCT problem? Listen carefully........

I know you are thinking that the DIY you have read or what the Helms says is ludicrous but it's a very simple procedure.
