It sounds like the starter is sticky.
I have the same problem on my car but it only does this in the cold mornings.
Grease it up and you should be good to go.
yea im interested on how to "grease it" ... what exactly do i grease? i'd really like to eliminate this problem... considering its been very cold here in vegas and actually snowing too! for two mornings already, its done it... i wanna fix this problem already...
For the sake of mentioning it, I had this problem on my Celica GT-S a while back. The dealer said it was most likely the engine not getting enough oil to lubricate correctly when it was cold. Is there any possiblity that this is true?

There is also little to lubricate on most starters although some do have a gear set to reduce speed and increase torque, but now that I have tried lubrication on my Nissan without success, I doubt 'grease' is the answer.
I am starting to believe that is problem (that happens in many makes) is an issue with a worn or contaminated starter solenoid that has slow response when below a certain temperature. When the component is warm from previous use or higher ambient temp the performance is normal.
Although it may be possible to disassemble and clean a solenoid (I have never tried it) they don't appear to be serviceable. I think the two answers are warm conditions or a new starter/solenoid.
I just replaced the starter on my Nissan and it is back to normal.
my car has been doing this horrible sound now for about 2 years........when its super cold in the teens, or when its been sitting for a few days. any chance one day the starter is just gonna be done?????
i remember on my old monte carlo i use to have tap the starter with a hammer when it was on its last leg but it never actually died.
