Mine has started to do it more and more. I'm also worried about something stripping out, but it only does it when cold. Very annoying and taking the starter out would be a major pain in the ass, as the intake manifold has to come off.

If you're sure the noise is coming from the starter assembly and not somewhere else, it is probably a sticking solenoid or a defective overrun clutch.

^^ I believe we know it's the starter assembly. But people are questioning why SO many of these cars do this.

Its the gear on the starter it isnt retracting back fast enough therefore its sounds like an overcrank.... Its your starter. i replaced my battery not to long ago and it doesnt do it as often

as said above it is the gear on the starter sticking. i found that if i let go of the starter button just before the car is actually started, it doesn't grind.

yep spot on...

I suffer from the same issue, it's just where it gets stuck for a bit, rpms raise and then it slides loose... think grease may work on it, just got to be careful how much you put on? Don't think with flywheel etc spinning that the grease could land anywhere near the friction surface of the plate?

It all depends on the problem, is it because there is extra friction so the gear teeth stay together longer? Or is it the way it retracts back in to the starter motor that's causing the issue? Also I got a new battery about February and during operation pumps 14.9V and it can still make the noise on startup... (so may not remedy all probs)

Holy thread bump! I think if your car is already warm and you try starting it again and it makes that noise then its the TCT otherwise when its cold then its the starter making that sound.

Mine still does it 2 years later, but only when it's cold. Not a big deal.
