Default help with gearing

I recently raced a guy with an ap1 with an intake and different gearing. I have an ap1 with catback and test pipe and he pulled me pretty good 1st and 2nd gear then I caught back up right at the end of 3rd. I have read that 4.77 is better than the stock 4.10? I really know absolutely nothing about gearing, and have tried to read about it but I can't find the right thread. If someone could explain to me what the difference is, which gearing is best for pulling a 40-120 race, pros and cons, and how much and where would I get them. Thanks for the help.

A 4.77 gear car will out accelerate a 4.10 car. A higher rear gear ratio will accelerate some amount faster. You'll trade off top speed, more shifting, and possibly gas mileage.
