No way the timing chain jumped teeth.

Check your rod bearings. hows your oil level?

Set all piston mid travel. Turn the crank back and forth slightly, see if one piston has play in relation to the crank.

thanks billman, yeah the head reinstall turned out a waste of 3 hours. i'll pull it off tomorrow, and prolly the whole engine. btw, the #4 seemed kinda loose, also it had slight oil seep and more carbon build up on pis head.

ps, i think i forgot to plug somthing in. on idle the motor revs high, drops down, revs high, drops down........ what did i forget???

Look at the air hose coming from the top of your valve cover to your intake? i think thats where it goes. to. make sure you put it back on and if so then check for a hole in the line. the hose is about 1 ft long. I pulled mine off the other day and stated it up before i put the hose back on and it did that same thing, rmp's went high then low then high ect....

Not sure about the hose, but if you had flakes in the VTEC solenoid and you had knocking/banging... I would say you have tossed a rod bearing. This is not uncommon at higher miles, especially on 00-01s that didn't have the oil jet bolts done early on. Typically you will run low on oil, start to get cylinder wall scoring, and either as a result of low oil or garbage in the oil, you will start to spin a bearing. This usually starts off as a rattling and then a knocking noise, by the time you hear knocking you are in for a very expensive rebuild, as the crank and rod will be trashed, possibly that cyl liner, and for sure the piston.

At this point it's usually cheaper to buy used and swap. Maybe even buy a new bottome end from Honda if the head is OK.

All this is speculation, you need to have the motor torn down and inspected. Based on our prior conversations and your history w/the motor, I wouldn't even bother with a compression or leakdown or anything other than just a complete teardown or even just a swap.

Sorry to hear it- based on your initial quiet knocking/ticking noise, I would not have expected this.

Also, it IS possible to skip teeth on the timing chain. I have seen it happen before. I've actually seen a motor where the tensioner plastic arm broke and got injested into the chain's path and caused the chain to skip and destroy all the valves, pistons, and most of the rockers.

Up and down idle is unplugged or stuck IAC valve. On side of intake manifold.

Pull the pan. Very easy. you will be able to move a rod a little if it spun a bearing.

Tripple check and be sure you remove all bolts.

Theres one hiding behind the AC bracket people miss.

actually, the crank damage doesnt seem that bad, is it possible to have it micropolished and bump up on the bearing for that rod???

will replace rod though.
