Default HELP OVER REV!

my cousin just overrevved from 3rd to 2nd going about 70. he put in the clutch the second we heard the car rev up and he let go of clutch slowly so he didnt depress it all the way.

I then took over and took it up to redline 1-4 and drove it normally on 5-6. the car doesnt smell like anythings burn, doesnt make any weird noises, and seems to drive fine.

Im worried if i might have damaged the valves, retainers, cylinders or ANYHTING..

First of all, relax and stop sounding like a panicked 13 year old girl.

If your cousin actually mechanically overreved the engine, you need to have a shop check for cracked valve retainers. If they are cracked have them replaced with AP2 retainers. Expect to spend $600-800 on this. If you don't know what a retainer is, search.

Everyone will probably tell you to pull the head and check for cracked retainers or something.

Can I ask why if the motor was already stressed by suffering an overrev, you went 100 mph and VTEC'd four gears? I'd drive like grandma afterward if that was my car...

what was the highest rpm that the engine saw on the over-rev ?. These engines have the ability to survive one over-rev if it isn't too bad depending on conditions.

So you thought your cuz overrevved your car and could have cracked a retainer... And you felt that redlining the car through the first four gears would make your problem better?

The bottom end of the engine could handle over-revving. However it's usually the valvetrains that don't take over-revving too well. 70mph in 2nd gear isn't too bad. I've seen Japanese test racers downshift to 2nd at around 70mph in a stock S2000 as it approaches a tight corner. It's probably not good for the car, but it wouldn't explode anything if done once or twice ocassionally.

I am not here to scare you just to provide knowledge...
first off, you probably wont know if something is wrong till days later honestly...more than not the damage will have occured within the head and if your lucky your valves arent bent...springs,seats,retainers etc are things you will have to replace and if you replace one just go ahead and spend the money to replace them all for mental security, if you do have bent valves then have them all replaced as well maybe even upgrade them(if you can afford)...I have seen an engine over reved to 10k and another to 10,500rpm both snapping multiple valves and causeing multiple mis-fires...with your situation look for your engine knocking, hesitation, exhaust puffing and maybe poppin, and of course a cel light...best of luck to you!!!!
