Thumbs up Help w/ exhaust

I noticed a burning plastic smell and sure enough, when I looked under the car, a stupid plastic grocery bag has found its way onto my stainless exhaust and is melting itself to the piping....

Is there anyway to clean it off and restore the finish on the exhaust or is it just done for aesthetically?

I would take the exhaust portion off and get different levels of metal polish to use after removing as much as you can. A dremel or buffer would work to speed up the process but it can be done by hand with enough time.

Thx! I'm going to try that. I think I have some Mother's Metal Polish at home. Wish me luck!

Could also try some sort of chemical to remove the plastic residue. I'm pretty sure lacquer thinner would take it off, that stuff is crazy!

i jus pulled as much off as i could let it go for a couple days so that it got nice and crisp then put it back on the lift and i mean you could literally jus take your finger and push the hunks of burnt plastic off

I tried the burn off trick but the bag that stuck on my exhaust was so thick the whole thing would just smoke and spew toxic fumes. Ended up dropping the exhaust, scrapping with a wood chisel, removing the residue with paint thinner, polishing with a fine 3M scouring pad and Flitz.

I now swerve to avoid bags blowing around the road.

Take the finest steel wool you can find which is like #00000 and you can clean it up with that. Then just follow it up with some polish. Didi this to my 5 year old exhaust and I was amazed.
