Default "Hesitation" while driving in VTEC

Hesitation might not be the right word, so I'll try to explain it. It's more a sensation that the engine and throttle response aren't smooth:

When driving the car around town maintaining a certain speed at below VTEC, the throttle response is quick and predictable. If I am trying to maintain a speed in VTEC (say 1st gear 45kmh!) I notice sometimes that the throttle response isn't very smooth.

If I let go the throttle a bit to slow down, the car tends to goto zero throttle and engine brake. If I squeeze on a bit of throttle, the car takes a split second and then jumps forward as power comes on. It's rather difficult to maintain a certain low amount of throttle when driving in VTEC.

Coasting down in VTEC with no throttle and then prodding the throttle also elicits a slight pause and then a jump as the power comes on.

It's almost as if the carburetor's acceleration pump circuit isn't letting enough fuel come in as more air enters due to the throttle opening up... but there's no carb

When just running through the gears at WOT or plenty of throttle, the engine is very smooth in VTEC.

Normal?

Mate...
you have the same problem that i had yesterday..

I post this problem last yesterday and got my problem fixed this morning...

the problem is your MAP sensor...
all you have to do it take it off and give it a few hit with the back of the screw driver and put it back in.. and everything should be back to normal...

Still have not been able to the S I bought in December, and a foot of new snow today.

But I do not have the manual yet and in case I run into this problem, does anyone have a good desciption of the location of the MAP sensor or an underhood pic? I am coming from a Toyota background and new to Hondas.

Could be spark plugs. Have you had the spark plug recall done? It's a different plug and a different torque now. Could be bad gas, dirty injectors and could still be a MAP sensor that is slightly out of range. These things have been known to go bad and not give a CEL.
You have an '00. It's possible your fuel filter is getting a bit clogged. It's in the fuel tank and is part of the fuel pump assembly.
You might also need a valve adjustment. Do you have any aftermarket stuff on the engine? VAFC, etc?

Oh, for reference, here's the MAP sensor:

It's the thing on the lower left side of the pic. Sits on top of the throttle body and has a wiring harness going to it.

Thanks for the pic. Although my guess is when I take a good look under the hood for the first time, it will probably say "MAP SENSOR" on it and I will feel like a doofus for asking.

yeah, I think it says "SENSOR, MAP" and sits right on top of the intake manifold!

Well the car was just in for 90.000km service in which they did: valve adjustment, spark plugs, and oil service. Fuel filter is scheduled to be replaced at 105.000km; that could be clogged. I threw in a bottle of fuel system cleaner before with no effect.

Bad gas? Maybe. I can easily reproduce this problem since awhile though.

Is the fuel filter a DIY job on this car?

It "could" be. Those of us who did our own supercharger install had to do the fuel pump. You have to take the fuel pump out of the fuel tank. This is not a simple task. Involves disassembling the soft top tray, working while laying over the secret compartment and then taking the fuel pump out the trunk. So the trunk liner has to be removed too.
