Default HID ballast replacement

so my driver side ballast went out, i priced out an oem one at my local honda dealer and its like 300 bucks or something crazy like that. so my question is are ther any plug and play aftermrket kits i can buy? i was told no and any aftermarket kit would require me to cut the harness and i really dont wanna go that route...

I would say any aftermarket kit will be plug and play - just splice in before the OEM ballast and ignitor. Considering you can buy good systems with new bulbs for $50, I wouldn't bother wit OEM. There are a few places you want to buy from - not eBay knockoffs - to get quality control.

DDM and this site have been recommended - www.theretrofitsource.com - but DDM will sell the kit you need - if splicing is an issue, any electronics store should be able to properly connect the wires to the car. I haven't looked myself, but I'd imagine there is a harness ahead of the ballast that simply unplugs.

I bought a low mileage set from an S2K owner to use as spare parts when my factory ones eventually die out. Put a post in the want to buy section you may get some decent replies.

I personally don't have much faith in aftermarket HID parts. I have a retro kit on my truck and in 6 months it has lost one bulb and one ballast already, it has been under warranty but it's still a pain. My 02 bulbs and ballasts are still going strong after 8 years, I would take an oem set any day of the week. If you do go aftermarket do yourself a favour and get the best warranty you can.

^Its true the OEM is best, but DDM tuning apparently gives lifetime warranty on their ballasts and bulbs. I have reverse HIDs in my car, and I abuse it. HIDs arent meant to be flashed on/off, they have to be allowed to "warm up" after striking. Since its in my reverse lights, they're constantly on/off on/off. Still going strong!
