Default Honda MTF ?

I want to change my manual trans lubricant. My S2K service manual and the owner's manual only says "use Honda MTF". I'd like to use and aftermarket synthetic product. What's the viscosity that I should use and any suggestions on a brand??
Thanks!

Honda recommends 10w30 /40 motor oil as a temp replacement so the Honda MTF is probably pretty close to this formulation but with more specific additives. I'm currenty using Amsoil 5w30 MTF wih no problems. Next change for me will be Honda MTF if for no other reason than to use as a comparison.

The new MTF is much thinner than the original MTF. It seems to be a very thin 20wt now. Here is a UOA from a 2006 S2000 from the factory fill:

It's a gear oil.
So you're supposed to use the SAE J306 spec.

8.6 cSt @ 100C makes it a SAE 80
This ^ combined with the 39.8 cSt @ 40C, results in a VI of 202

The "W" depends on the cold & hot temp flow, so it's most likely a 80W.

Making MTFIII a 80W-80 gear oil when its used.
A VAO should give better results.

^Hey, whaddaya know, if its ~80W, that means the redline MTL I have been using is right in spec! Some guys were saying to use the MT-90, but I always felt the MTL felt correct - never did try the 90 though.

I stand corrected!!!

Anyways, I was just trying to relate to the previous posts that were using engine oil SAE viscosity. I'm not sure why AMSOIL labels their synchromesh MTF as 5W-30 since it is a gear oil.

The 80W Honda MTF has been working great for me. I just changed it out after a 6K run and all is well again. Thin is in I guess.

No real need for a VOA. This stuff seems as thin as water to me right out of the bottle and leaked like a sieve in the metal hand pump. I don't remember thinking that when I poured and pumped the original MTF.

Try Redline MTL 70W80 (synth). I used it on my last change and it has been great! I still get a very small amount of 1-2 notch when it is cold or the car has been sitting a while but once it's up to temp it is great. I had used HMTF and thought it worked well but didn't last very long before the 1-2 notch would get nasty. I'm at 2k on Redline and it seems to have gotten better so if you do try it give it some time.

I will prolly change the fluid again at 4k the next few changes just to get the HMTF out. I feel better with synth in there.
