Default Honda's 10w30 oil doesn't smell like oil

I changed my oil today. My new S2000 has 5141 miles on it and I replaced the old oil with 10w30 oil I got from the dealer, along with a new OEM PCX oil filter. The oil smells different. My friend said it smells like gear oil. But, I have to admit, this it the first time I have done an oil change with anything other than Mobil1 in a long time, so it may just be the smell of conventional oil that I am not used to.

gear oil would be very apparent as the smell is overwhelming.

if it said 10w30 on the bottle, then you're good to go.

also, i'd look into 10w30 Havoline GF4.

Well, even though the Honda oil is made by Mobil for Honda and it is not synthetic, it smells nothing like Mobil1 SuperSyn. It has a little bit of a gassy smell. It smells the same as the 5w20 Honda oil they gave me for the the 2005 Civic Si I used to own, and I have about a half a quart of this stuff left.

What is so great about the Havoline GF4 oil?

read the oil journals in the tech forum.

with the exception of drain interval, it is on par or better than most synthetics.

daytontp,
May I ask how much did the Honda dealer charge you for each quart of 10w30 oil ?

I got a coupon for 1 free PCX oil filter for 4 quarts of oil. My dealer charged me $3.xx a quart, so the total was $12.xx + tax for 4 quarts and PCX filter.

Honda 10w30 oil should actually be Mobil Drive Clean 10w30. Go buy a quart and smell it and see if it smells the same

I've personally been using Motorcraft 10w30. Will probably switch over to Amsoil or Castrol Syntec once I hit 10k miles.

They charged me $26 for the PCX filter, a crush washer and 8 quarts. I have found this dealer to be really good on parts, sometimes less than Advance, AutoZone and the like.

Any 10w30 should do the trick, though I like Mobile1 synthetic myself.

The oil filter is probably fine but I used the honda pcx one. Good filter.

And turn off the cap locks. Gives me a headache
