Default Horsepower vs. PS question

Fellow board members:

Did a search and found nothing but I was wondering if this has been discussed before...just a couple of questions:

1. What does PS stand for? I'm assuming it's the metric equivalent of horsepower or 745Watts.

2. Assuming that 1 HP is equivalent to 1 PS, why the difference in power between the JDM and US specs? What is the factor in the reduced HP?

Just wondering.

I don't believe HP=PS (but it's very close, if my calcs are correct). The JDM engines show 7 more HP because they're running at a compression of 11.7:1 compared to US 11.0:1....the gasket on JDM engines is a bit thinner. Don't know what PS stands for, off the top of my head...

Mr. MacGyver:

So it's as simple as that...wow. They are allowed more compression due to their octane ratings at the pump (What is the max octane over there anyways?).

If I were to order a JDM head gasket and install it, will 93 octane be okay to run without causing detonation?

Thanks Doc,

240hp x 1.0139 = 243.336 PS
250PS x 0.98632 = 246.58 hp.

Very enlightening.

Hi Virus and Doc,

I believe PS is not even equal to the metric Horse Power!

1 HP (imperial) = 1.01386950 HP (metric) = 0.745700000 kW
1 HP (metric) = 0.986320236 HP (imperial) = 0.735499000 kW

Regards,

Peter
