How long will a new battery last on the shelf?
When I bought my car, I made the Dealer give me a new Honda battery because I thought the one that was in the car was going bad because of how slow it cranks over, turns out all S-2000s crank slower than all the other Honda cars that I'm used to. Anyway I have this brand new battery in my garage and was wondering how long it will last without being used, I give it a little charge once in a while. I've had it already for 6 months.
Not sure how long but i know that it will be good for at least a year or longer. I store my car every winter, and i recentaly went to iraq and had my s stored for a year and 2 months. I disconnected the battery and 1 year and 2 months later i came home connected the batteries and the car started up perfect. by the way its the original battery and my car is an 01
Batteries that are stored "wet" i.e. with acid in them have a self life of only a few years due to the sulfating of the plates. There are to many variables to give a definitive answer, but my experience over many years with many cars would be to say once a battery is about 4 years old you are living on borrowed time.
