Put in new hoses and have fluid smell often and no fluid in resivior. Car has not overheated and no fluid on the ground.

The fluid in the overflow reservoir should be between the "low" and high" lines. It sounds to me like you have a leak in the system somewhere. Perhaps you should check all those clamps you've put on again.
Keep the reservoir filled to between the lines. Anytime you open up your cooling system (like in changing hoses, etc), you will need to bleed the system. In spite of this, it will take several heat up/cool down driving cycles to completely "burp" all the air out. While it is doing this, it will continue to suck fluid out of the reservoir on the cool down stage. Top it up when hot so you don't suck more air in. Top it up again when cold if it's too low. Eventually, assuming you've taken care of the leaks and loose clamps, it will no longer need topping up.
