Default How often to change oil?

How often should you change your oil, say if you were using fully senthetic?

I wait till about 4,000 miles...is that too long?

I haven't started using synthetic oil yet, but when I do (starting with the next change at 7,500 miles), I plan on following Honda's recommendation. As I consider myself in the "severe use" category, along with close to 100% of the others on this list, that means every 3750 miles. 4,000 miles would be close enough, IMHO.

Remember, changing one's oil isn't required because the oil has lost it's ability to provide lubrication, it's usually because of all of the additional contaminents which work their way into the crankcase as time and mileage take their toll.

It depends upon how, where, how often. In general the following applies:

Starts (especially cold), cold operation, and heavy loads put more wear on the engine and wear by-products in the oil. Time, high humidly, and a failure to get the engine to full operating temperature can aid in the build up of oil contaminants. Truthfully, premium oil whether it be synthetic or not does not break down easily or quickly (but they are both equally affected by contaminates).

If you make numerous short trips, drive in cold conditions, idle a lot (which contaminates the oil without adding mileage), or subject the engine to heavy loads, changing the oil and filter every 3 or 5 thousand miles is appropriate. Regular high rpm or WOT use can also add to contaminates suggesting that this oil change schedule is appropriate.

If your driving is in moderate conditions and trip length the recommendations of 7500 miles has been proven to work just fine.

If you drive exclusively on the highway where restarts are limited and speeds and temperature are nominal, the oil is probably good for up to 15 thousand miles.

A good guideline is to insure oil is changed at least every year regardless of miles.

Bottom line your schedule is right for most S2000

I suppose it depends how you drive your car and how often as well. I drive my car hard and I would love to keep it in showroom condition. So I change my engine oil and filter every 2,500KMs. No problems with that, and it sure is much better because I have friends who don't do so. My car happens to be quite smoother running when compared.

Thanks for the info all!

I broke 38,400 miles last weekend and my 4000 mile mark was up for an oil change. The car was feeling a bit sluggish; oil level was fine, but the engine did not feel right.

Changed the oil saturday (oil was really dark), and the car felt much better. Could be psychological...oh well.

I drive the car pretty damn hard...maybe I should consider changing the oil a little sooner.

Due to the same beliefs and reasons, I will also start changing my oil every 2,500Mi with tri-synthetic oil after the 7500Mi service. This is what I used to do with my GTI VR6 and it kept it running striong and smooth for the entire 40K miles that I had it for.

If you drive it hard, i highly suggest every 3000 miles. An oil change is no more than $40 compared to a $10,000 engine.
Simple!
