How to Repaint Bumpers
I just picked up a bumper of a different color. What would be the proceedure to repaint in another color? Do I have to sand and reprime first or what?
A good, quality, long lasting paint job is best left to a professional. Painting a car is one of those things that takes many screwups to master, and half of that is the proper prep work to the surface prior to painting. Good luck,
You of course have the flex additive that needs to be added to the paint lying around, have a positive atmosphere or water filtering paint booth to avoid airborne debris, and understand that the flex additive has a pretty short shelf life? You know all that, right? Of course, the additive changes the optimal pressure settings for your powered air gun, but you also have that scoped as well.
Not trying to discourage you, and you can certainly paint it, the qiestion is what are your objectives? What is the end game? If you want it to look original, this is not the job for an amateur. No offense intended.

Since you insist on doing it yourself. What kind of paint are you using? Get the good stuff. Sand with super fine grit . Prime it , paint it. Use about 2 light coats of primer, 6-8 light coats of color and about 4-5 light coats of clear. I hope it matches and lasts for you. Hold the spray about 6-8" away from the bumper in short sweeping back and forth horizontal strokes with a little overlap. Allow each coat to almost dry between coats(tacky). The more coats you do allow to dry longer. Does this help you?
I appreciate everyone's concern. I have painted cars before and I have the guns etc, but by no means am I an expert. (Note I never said I painted them the right way!!) I also work for a company that paints 1,000,000 million OEM spoilers a year so I have some idea of the basics. Primarily I am rebuilding a wreck and want to prep and preassemble the parts for final painting. I understand the flex additive etc. but have not actually done a bumper myself. I'm simply tying to find out if I need to prime before top coating or can just scuff the base coat. What a chore!!!: banghead: Seems like it was a simple question that's getting way too complicated.

We buy about $1,000,000 bucks of paint a year so if I get down to the end painting I will probalbly have them supply me a freebie as they have on another project. Right now I'm just rying to piece all the parts together to have it ready for a painter becaus eI haven't decided on the finmal paint scheme. Kind of sounds like the bumpers probalby should be painted off the car now that I really think about it.
