1/4" vertical play. horizontal play will be less. wow, a stock setting is correct. why would honda do that? You can tighten it more if you want.. thats just the spec.
the honda manual never said anything of VERTICAL...

my interpretation is horizontal play...because thats how the cable travels...that is relevant free play...vertical is not relevant at all

....You don't want to cable to move immediately when the pedal is pressed. You want a little slack....
LOL and why would that be my friend?

Bottom line, it's personal preference. If you like a useless delay, by all means give it a mile of slack.

The slack is there to accomodate things like engine motion, thermal expansion, etc. Just make sure that the TB is wide open when the pedal is fully depressed. Removing all the slack just increases tension in the cable when you "floor it", which can lead to cable stretch over time.
^
here's a reason

Worse it can snap!! Especially if you are hard on the pedal!

Sounds like I'm going to have to look into this, this weekend. I just don't like hearing that it can snap if your too hard on the pedal.

It's not going to snap If it's overtightened it will bull the throttle open when your foot is not on the gas pedal. That's the worst case scenario. Tighten it as much as you can without opening the throttle and you're good.

It should take all of 5 minutes to do. You should def feel an improvement in throttle response based on the age of the car.

it was harder to floor the pedal.

i don't know why.

when i returned the cable to stock setting (with free play)...it was back to normal again.

i don't know why.
