i have seen ap1 coil packs fail and take out a low mileage engine to a local guy, hence why i have been hearing more than one person suggest to get 04-05 ap2 coil packs for your ap1 (2002 is my car) motor.

just a thought. . . .

From what I have read MY04-05 are not better but popular because they are like 1/2 the price of other MY years (because it interchanges w/ other cars).

I have read MY00-01 performed best under boosted conditions (stock for stock).

There are posts saying MY06+ will work for prior years also but the HELMS says not to do so. I would think it would have to do with the DBW system.

I, myself have replaced my project car's MY02 CP's w/ MY04-05 and it runs perfect.

If you want to do a fair comparison I would think you would have to buy one of each CP brand new so variables are reduced. It's the only proper way to do a fair comparison IMO.

the anectdotal evidence I've read was people with boosted setups were geting misfires with Ap1 coils but not with the RSX coil, which turns out to be the same as the 04-05 S2K coil. Whatever that is worth. I would use the 04/05 coils as we know they work fine, and they cost so much less than the others.

Perhaps the 06+ coils are protected to reduce electrical noise even futher given the DBW system ?.

One thing about the S2K for sure, when it has a part that is used/shared with other Honda models the price difference is huge, when you need a part that is specific to the S2K the price skyrockets and approaches ridiculous at times.

for example. why are 04-05 better? anyone ever rip apart a 00 or 04 and see what gauge the wire is, maybe thickness of insulator, etc..
All I know is that Honda reviewed the entire car and made thousands of incremental improvements with the 2004 model, so if Honda changed them, there was some reason to do so. That, plus the anecdotal evidence here.

Interesting thread.

Most of the info I got was based on reading from the racing forums and the FI forums. A lot of people state that "it works" and usually the thread ends.

average lifespan of the coils is close to 100k miles, they seem to fail around 90-100k based on postings on here, but you'll always get some that go further than that.

I heard ap2 coilpacks in general were best ( no specific year). I also heard people pushing higher psi on ap1 coils were getting missfires at high rpm. I also heard the k20 coil packs were the same as ap2 packs. With that being said, I was going to swap the coil packs from my 08 si to my 03 s2k so when I go boost down the road i won't have to worry about it. Good idea or no?
