munckee, you're really getting into working on your car so you should go to Sears or Harbor Freight and get a decent floor jack and a couple of jack stands. I use mine quite a bit, and they really do pay for themselves. Ramps that you get at the store are hard to use on our cars. They sit so low, the body work hits the ramp before the wheel is even on it. As for planks or blocks, you are'nt getting the car up very high.

I'm sure tons of guys do exactly what you're describing, Munchkee, and many of them swear by it. That said, all I said (and am saying) is that *I* wouldn't do it. I'm a believer in tools, and there's probably a reason that jack stands are made out of metal, all have essentially the same design, and that you can't find wooden blocks sold at Autozone for the purposes you're describing. I'm not going to debate you further on this one. Do whatever you want. I do wish you well and hope you'll suffer no harm.

Whoa, I'm not trying to get into an argument here at all. I was simply trying to discuss the pros and cons of each solution.

Bill, I have a jack and a pair of stands. I do use them when necessary. I just feel more comfortable when the car is supporting its own weight, so I do whatever work I can in that manner before getting out the jack.

FYI - Rhino ramps do work for our car. I have a set. If you are not lowered or have a front lip then the ramps work fine.
