Default Issue w/ 1st gear

All,

I have to admit I am neither an experienced manual transmission driver nor an experienced mechanic. That is why I came to you!

Sometimes I have a bit of trouble getting the car into first (from 2nd or less often Neutral). None of the other gears have this "stickyness". It happens about every fourth time I drive the car, so it is not really a big issue.

When it happens from neutral, I can usually go 2nd to 1st with no problem. Yes the clutch is fully depressed.....

The car is certified and a month old (2001).

I have this same issue with my '02, especially when it's cold. I think it is just the way it is.

Thanks for the reply. I feel better now. Now that I think of it, it happens when it is very cold out.

Cheers...

Anyone else???????

Yes, 1st is this way on my '02, and especially when cold. I'm confident that this is as-design behavior.

blip the throttle a little and it will slide into gear easier.

This is true - Rev matching is a must on downshifts, especially the large 2-1 shift.

I just replaced my clutch master and slave cyls...they were full of gunk! shifts are even easier now. try flushing your clutch fluid too.

If you're completely stopped and it doesn't want to go into first gear, let the clutch out in neutral, this will get the layshaft spinning. Then when you push the clutch back in, you should be able to get it into gear.

If you're rolling and trying to get back into first, blip the throttle while the clutch is out in neutral. That gets the layshaft speed closer to the speed at which the gear is spinning, so it should go in easier.
