I had an Exedy clutch installed in my S2K this summer. The stock clutch lasted 38k miles, but the replacement Exedy clutch I had put in ($1,000+) failed with only 1,200 miles on it. Exedy claims clutch wore normally and did not warranty it out.

Fortunately, the tuning shop I work with is exceptional and they took care of me. None to happy with Exedy. The replacement clutch that was put in after the Excedy failed is doing fine with 2,800 miles on it.

Any similar experiences out there? I have heard that Exedy has had issues with the S2K, but I'm interested in actual data rather than 2nd hand info.

There have been several occurences in Aus (incl. Iggy and H9K) of the Exedy failing quite early.

The conclusion was that this is a race clutch and doesn't fair well in stop/start street driving. Continual slipping causes the clutch to wear and die in a short period of time.

In short, unless your S is primarily a track car this isn't the clutch for you.

The clutch get hot very quickly in start/stop traffic and then get slippery.
It may be due to the fact that I have not broken it in properly but it's fine for normal driving except city driving.

It's a little bit better with the 4.44 as you don't have to rev up as much in 1st gear. May be something for you to consider.

So what is the ideal clutch then for city/highway driving conditions in terms of aftermarket replacement?

I broke it in properly. Car is typically driven only 5 to 10 miles total Mon-Fri. Solo II on the weekend and of course canyon runs. I have the 4.77 final gear.

The Exedy Web site and data sheet make a lot of claims about the durability of this clutch. A $1,000 clutch that fails in 1,200 miles ... with same driving as what the stock clutch endured for 38,000 miles is
