Unhappy J's 4.77 Final gear set: noisy ?

Hi guys... those of you with J's final drive... or other brands too...

I need your help if you can.

I just installed today J's 4.77 gear set on my S2000.

We did put Motul 90 PA differential gear oil inside (they told me it's good).

OEM parts (ballbearings and some other bits) mounting was also necessary...

I noticed that the "noise" coming from the differential has increased a bit...

I mean from the "stock" 4.1 OEM one...

It's a recursive noise (like the one from a fan..) particularly evident at mid range.. between 4000 / 6000 and at low speeds when stepping on the gas...

It's always there anyway...

The car runs fine... no problem afaik.

Only this noise it's a bit annoying when cruising on the highway.

Before i could not feel it at all...

It's day one so... maybe it will settle after some driving?

Or maybe is it the Motul 90 PA oil effect ??

Or is it the way it has to be?? I have no clue.

Do you remember when you first installed it .. did you feel the same "noise effect" or increased noise of any kind ???

Thanks for your time ....

Carlo

Mine would whine from time to time. But not to the same extent that you are describing. Mine is nowhere near unbearable...

As for diff fluid I am using Mobil 1. Not sure if that's a factor...

Well .. it's not unbearable... it's just.. "annoying".

As i said.. maybe it's about the oil..???

What about GEAR 300 75W90 100% ESTER SYNTHETIC ?? Justin from AJ racing says most of the guys @ AJ are using this one...

How is it compared to the Motul 90 PA i am using..??

Which one would you reccomend ???

I would say that the ring and pinion is not set right. Did you install it to the Honda Helms manual specs? What is the back lash set at?

That sounds pretty typical of deeper gears, especially in that rpm range. You can pull your fluid, look for particle content and check your backlash.

I run Mobil1 in my 444's with ford's friction modifier it seems to be a good combination in the Torsen differential.

Will do that.. how many Km. should i need to wait to test this ???

2000 / 3000 / 5000 ??? Or.. ???

What should i be looking at (good or bad) ???

What is Honda recommending for standard 4.10 OEM diff. ???

Is Mobil1 different than Mobil300 right??

The specs fromthe Motul 90 PA are still suitable for my 4.77 J's one ??

Thanks everyone.. keep goin' !!!

I think the winding noise is coming from the rotation of the gear. At at certain speed the diff actually winds faster than stock. You can try some better oil like Motul Gear FF and they specifically developed for aftermarket LSD in diffs ot tranny and that should help a bit.

Also, are you breaking the gears in properly? I think you should take it back to Honda and have them look at it. While it could be nothing, there is a chance that your baclash is not set correctly. I have the 4.77 and there is little whine from car.

I think you may be right but... is there a specific value / way to set back lash in a correct way ??

I beleive the mechanic did not follow exactly the "by the book" way..

He mentioned earlier today that he did set it a bit differently than stock setup. Maybe (i assume) a bit "tighter" ???

I wonder why they always want to do more than they are supposed to...

It's a an old story i guess... not only here in Italy.

Anyway... i'll give it a try for a week...

In the meantime please keep helping me out with your precious suggestions...

I am sure we'll get there.
