I think you may be right but... is there a specific value / way to set back lash in a correct way ??

I beleive the mechanic did not follow exactly the "by the book" way..

He mentioned earlier today that he did set it a bit differently than stock setup. Maybe (i assume) a bit "tighter" ???

I wonder why they always want to do more than they are supposed to...

It's a an old story i guess... not only here in Italy.

Anyway... i'll give it a try for a week...

In the meantime please keep helping me out with your precious suggestions...

I am sure we'll get there.

Carlo
No, don't give it a try for a week. If your gears are improperly installed and you continue to drive the car, you could cause some MAJOR damage.

Mine were installed using the stock specs. No problems for almost a year.

Definitely take tenblade's advice seriously. You could seriously screw the gears up majorly. Well I suppose if they did fail the mechanic would be liable for the damages, but I'm sure you won't want to get into all of that.

Perhaps ask why he chose a different setting because the stock settings should be ideal.

There isn't any reason to set them up differently than stock. Only the 4.57's require a different backlash setting. At this point the gears may allready be damaged from running them setup incorrectly.

I will follow your advice...

Can you explain how would the mechanic set the backlash ??

Would it be necessary to start from scratch the whole process just like i am installing it from the beginning?

You set backlash with a dial indicator and a of pin-faced spanner wrench. You have to turn the bearing adjusters in sequence to set the backlash reading in spec.

It is not something for the shadetree mechanic to undertake.

At this point it's a remove the Differential and re-check every setting. it is also possible that the pinion depth is incorrect and will need to be re-set with a different shim.

Every time you change pinion shims, a new crush collar/distance piece must be used.

Can you give me the Honda part number for this collar/distance piece??

I have a feeling this could be the problem....

One of the necessary OEM items needed to complete the swap had to be taken from the original gear set...

Shit ... if i only would have taken pics ....

Def. not my finest hour today....

This is a picture gallery of whatever i got back from the installation... (except for the two main items pinion/crown which are not pictured).

I remember before installation, i had as spare OEM parts both of the ballbearings..

One of them (not pictured and disappeared..) the mechanic said it got "wrecked" during uninstall...

Here are the leftovers... I may add some more pics later...

http://img163.imageshack.us/gal.php?c=c6c7...0972.jpg&cols=4

Tested the car this morning.. it runs very fine...

I get wining only randomly... but mainly i noticed in fourth gear at 3000 / 3500 / 4000 rpm... especially when the gears are "warm"...

I need to install the yellowbox cause i get very funny speeds... (much higher than it should..).

Any suggestions on where to cut the speed wire before it reaches the ECU ?? Where to put the yellowbox in my S2000 ...??? Near ECU ??

Thanks again.

You should be fine with a used bearing, but I would be conserned that the installer could trash a new bearing, and then reinstall the used bearing. But if they did not change the shims (Honda Part) and the collar/distance piece, then the gear is not set right. This you need to find out before you drive any further.

Thanks everyone.

I decided tomorrow AM first thing i'll bring the car back to Honda service.

I drove again tonight and .. yes .. the gear noise at 5500 / 6000 is particularly evident...

Can anyone kindy supply me with FULL LIST of all necessary OEM spare parts of everything needed to complete the diff. work from scratch?

Please list in order of importance... if possible.

41271-PCZ-003 - Collar/distance piece
91001-PCZ-003 - Bearing
..........................
.......................
...................
..............

Can anyone show me which one is the "collar/distance piece" on a picture/diagram/blueprint that shows all the bits from the AP1 differential ??

Do you think that replacing the 10 bolts would be necessary again ?? Kinda difficult to order them from J's racing in a quick way...

GRRRRrrr... I am so pissed off !!!

Carlo

PS - Look at what a found at Rick's Rear Gear Sets website.. i wonder how do you comment on this phrase :

"Please note: The 4.57 gears sets are a performance product, made by Richmond Gear specifically for the S2000. The extra strength of the gear teeth result in a gear whirring sound that can be heard on acceleration. While the sound is not louder than many of the other mechanical noises common to high performance sports cars like the S2000, the whirring sound is noticeable, particularly with the top up. While many performance drivers consider such sounds part of the joy of driving a high performance car, buyers who put a premium on the absence of cockpit noise might be dissatisfied with this whirring sound.
