J's 4.77 Final gear set: noisy ?
When I installed my 4.57, I used the stock shimming and the noise was so loud you had to yell at the passenger for him to hear you on deceleration and not so much on acceleration. I then got it professionally installed and the decel noise is gone and the accel noise is much less. But there is still a noise when accelerating especially at around 4k-5k rpm. But from what I've heard that is completely normal for this gear set. And seeing that the 4.77 is even more aggressive a certain amount of noise seems normal. But all my research has been with the 4.57's, so don
After about 4 hours of trying different size shims last night with my 4.77s i actually know some stuff about this topic. Im telling you now, the shims that Honda sells, most likely wont work with the 4.77s. They are too thick. My buddy had to grind the OEM shims down smaller so that the gears were in perfect contact with the pinion. I hope all goes well tonight.
Glad I paid $250 for shims that were useless!

But, I do have another shim that is SO close to perfect its crazy. We made it a little bit too thin. If everything goes well tonight, I will PM you and we can work something out to get the shim to you. As people stated, every gear set will need a different size shim, so it might be perfect for you. It will be close at least I would assume and then you can go from there to determine what size you need. Wish me luck. Im going to be putting the diff back in in about and hour!
!!!!!
I dont have an exact measurement and as long as everything goes smooth tonight, I wont have to take it apart ever again!

Good luck !!
How thin is this one?? Exact size..??
I am sure your shim would enjoy a nice trip to Rome, Italy !!!
Yeah.. might .. or might not. My stock differential had 30K Km. on... We'll see...
:doublefingercrossed for a great guy !!!

Mine is back in and its all good. Makes a little bit of noise, but I blame that due to us not perfecting the contact position for the gears. It was 2 AM and it was close enough. Runs good. Feels a lot faster. Now I need to install the yellow box so i dont have to mathematically guess what my MPH is in my head. I might take the diff back out to try to perfect it, but well see how everything goes. PM me if you wanna talk about the shim!
