Thumbs up Just did a compression test...

My wife has an '04 Civic with an '04 K20A2 in it. When we first did the engine swap, the motor "apparently" only had 1550 miles on it. Sure. Whatever. A compression test was done by the shop whom did the install and "apparently" checked out ok. Sure. Whatever. If the engine really had 1550 miles on it, it now has ~18K miles on it. I just did a compression test myself and here are the numbers:

#1 - 132
#2 - 134
#3 - 135
#4 - 133

With the exception of cylinder #3, the other cylinders are all below the factory minimum specs of 135. However, they are all really close to one another and are within the maximum factory range of 28 psi. With that in mind, it would seem to me that the engine probably has more than 18K miles on it and is getting "tired".

After doing the compression test, I installed new spark plugs. They are NGK 1ZFR6K11s, gapped to .040mm, and torqued to 18 ft-lbs. The car started and idle just fine.

Any feedback?

HI:

It seems like the engine has more than 18k on it. for a high compression engine like the a2 the numbers should be higher. i did a compression test on my moms civic si with a k20a3 and the numbers were as follow:

1#145
2#145
3#140
4#128

Honda civic si 2002 with 86000 miles.

considering that the k20a3 has a 9:1 compression. your numbers should be higher.

on my Honda s2000 i got:

1#190
2#190
3#185
4#188

In accordance with the factory service manual.

those compression numbers seem low to me. I had a dual cam ZC in my hatch and with the stock compression of 9.6:1 and fresh rings (~300 miles) I was getting between 190-200 psi across the board.

Then again, I have no clue how the cams affect the compression readings on the K-motors either.

there's alot of variable: number of crank, battery condidtion, brand and condition of the gauge, user error.

you want a consistant number more than anything, i know my gauge reads on the low side.

did you get a wet test after the dry test?

# of cranks: 4-5 (as per the factory manual)

battery condition: full charge

The gauge was brand new--just bought it from Kragen

What is a wet test? I did the test in accordance with the factory manual.

The compression tester was manufactured by "Innova Equus" and the part number is #3614. I purchased the best compression tester that Kragen had to offer.
