Default K & N filter replacement, good or bad?

my oem filter is real dirty and I don't want to keep on replacing that when I can just get one that is reusable. But is true that putting on a k&N filter only will make my car lose power?

Keep in mind that Rick put in the complete kit. A drop in may not produce any noticeable effects.
You might consider the JR filter as it has been said some people in the know around here that it is a better quality filter than the K&N. However, this is reflected in the quality. Might not be worth the extra cost to you though.

One of the reported downsides to the K&N drop-in element is the inlet design. The stock unit, JR, and Comptech have a smooth tapered inlet and it has been reported that the K&N simply has a flat piece with a hole in the center. At least one poster has speculated that this causes a slight power drop instead of gain.

I have not examined the filter and am only summarizing previous posts.

you are just peeing in the wind putting in a K&N drop in.
I did it and it was wasted money, Now a K&N aircharger will give real HP!

A drop in filter is almost impossible to dyno so who's to say in terms of performance? The stock system is already very good. The advantage of a JR or K&N is that it doesn't require replacement ever, only cleaning. I clean mine every year. If it flows even just a bit better, then my "butt dyno" is happy. However, if you ever plan to replace the stock airbox, you'd be wasting your money. Just wait till you decide if a CAI is in your near future.

The air inlet is not tapered from the filter chamber to the air tube like it is on the OEM and other units. In fact your pic does suggest that is true.. compare the construction to another.
