Default Knocking @ startup

Anyone getting knocking from S2k when they start the engine?

Disconcerting considering the threads I've been reading about the 01's. If this is what I think it is, this means that there's oil in the chamber that is making knocking happen at startup.

Thanks all. Peter

Haven't pulled the plugs yet, and it is time.

However, just a drop of oil will cause knocking, or fumes alone, the oil level change could be very negligible.

I'll take my ipaq out and post a .wav file so that you guys can hear this and tell me if this is what you hear.

There was a post by a an anonymous dude from inside Honda named "woodwork" who mentioned that a knocking noise on start up could be due to the fact that the pistons have not warmed (and thus expanded) up and they rock back and forth inside of the cylinder wall.

Does it go away after a minute or so after it idles?

Just at the first turn of the crank it knocks. Mighta gotten some bad gas. Changed to a different brand and the knocking has been significantly reduced.

Texaco - Knock on startup, but feeling more power
76 - A little sluggy but no knock

Checked the plugs, some signs of detonation, typical crappy 91 Cali octane, probably more around 88.

Anyways, there was no oil on the combustion chamber, but 1 and 4 had lotsa oil on the threads.

Any thoughts? Is the valve cover just not torqued enough?

I checked my plugs yesterday. One was a little loose (not terribly) and the other were fine. The condition of the plugs themselves looked to be great with just a little carbon (soot) on the highest part of the thread. I was happy with the condition of the plug with no signs of fouling or oil. I did, however, see a small coating (barely noticeable) of oil on the outside of the plugs. I attribute this to being a little sloppy when adding oil and it dripping and seeping into the plug holes. I had a little oil on the valve covers under the track and I could see where it may drip into the plug holes. This may be why yours shows a little oil as well. No biggie.

What struck me as odd was that the porcelain (outside of plug) had a slight orange ring where it meets the metal. Perhaps a lot of heat?

I am not sure about torqueing the valve cover though? I would check in a month or so to see if their is still oil present. Be careful not to spill any oil when adding to the engine.
