I have a bone stock MY 02 and believe I have this same noise. It's a ticking that almost sounds like a constant buzz and seems to be coming from near my feet. Car also seems to run fine. I was thinking about getting a valve adjustment...but not so sure that's the culprit.

 

I had a valve adjustment pretty recently (60k) so I don't think it's that either. I feel like it may be the clutch master as ridiculous as that sounds.

 

Bump, this noise is still happening right before 3k and ends at about 4k it seems.
