Link to a Rear Gear Break-In Procedure?
So I'l be getting my OEM diff back w/ my 4.77s installed in them. I'll ask the installer what he recommends but just as a back-up what do others recommend? Numerous heat cycles with very little load or differing loads such as a motor break-in?
This is a copy&paste from Richmond Gear installation instructions pdf.
A new ring and pinion installation, especially a high
numeric ratio with new bearings, can cause an excessive
heat buildup in the rear end and cause softening of the
gear teeth and bearings if a break in is not performed.
Street vehicles should be driven at normal street driving
speed for approximately 10 miles, then stop and let cool for
30 minutes. Do this 2 to 3 times. Towing vehicles need
approximately 200 to 300 miles of normal street driving
before being used for towing.
After the heat cycles I took it easy for 100-200 km, after that I accelerated till redline occasionally, and NOT repeatedly.
Personally I changed the oil after the first 1000 km.
And I didn't use LE-607 during those first 1000 km (Honda Marine SAE 90 GL-5).
For the same reasons Honda recommends dino oil during engine break-in.
I'm going to change the oil again after 10000 km and probably going to keep that shedule (or anything between 10k and 12.5k km)
There is not a lot of oil in the diff and it has to work hard.
