Loosing oil - no leak or smoke!
Hi guys,
I've had my s2000 coming up to a year now. I've had no problems at all up until now, a few months back my oil light came on, checked the dipstick to see barley any oil! I had checked A few times since owning the car and it had been fine!
I decided to change the oil (I decided to go for 5w30 Mobil1 after being recommended by a few people) , oil filter and spark plugs, Now 2-3 months down the line I have checked the level again and it's on the bottom on the dip stick again!
There are no leaks from around the filter or any points around the engine, no patches on the drive etc. I've had many people follow me and no one has notice any smoke from the exhaust!
My dad has a compression tester so I was going to check the rings with that this weekend, if not I'm guessing it could be valve stem oil seal? But wouldn't either of these leaking cause smoke anyway? :/
Also the car has just reached 51,000 so would hope the rings havnt gone! It always be driven carefully, not vtec'd when cold etc. and the only owner before me seemed to take care of it as well!
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Matt

It is common for AP1's to burn a little oil. You are very lucky that you did not damage the engine. Usually when the oil light comes on for any amount of time it is to late for your car and the damage has been done. I would look into doing to compression test, and maybe even take it to the dealership for them to diagnose any potential problems. I would highly doubt that a Honda s2000 with only 51,000 miles will have any major engine problems, unless it ran out of oil. You should not be checking your oil every 2-3 months. That is where your problem is. I check my oil every 500 miles, depending on how hard I been driving the car. Furthermore, some users on this site do not recommend using Mobil1 oil, as it is said to cause engine problems. Although I do not have any hardcore evidence on this statement, I personally do no use mobil1.
When you said you checked the oil and it is at the bottom of the dipstick, where exactly do you mean? Literally at the bottom, or at the bottom of the X's?

Yeah I think that was bad on my part by not checking it more often, had just been used to previous cars not using oil at this rate!
Well I had checked it about 2 weeks down the line after the oil change and I couldn't notice any big drop in the level!
I expect I would have only driven between 1000-1500 max since the change!
It's below the X's getting to the bottom of the stick!
Yeah thought it was low mileage for ring etc to be a problem :/ guess it's worth checking just to be safe!
Okay so could be worth trying an alternative oil, what would you recommend?
Thanks for the reply

From the H mark to the L mark is 1 quart. I'm not sure how low the oil would be if its only registering at the bottom of the stick. Here is a link on how to properly check your oil.

IMO, if you have only driven 1000-1500 miles max you are losing an excessive amount of oil. (Sort of there are too many variables) How often do you redline and hit VTEC? also what year is your car? I don't know what can cause an excessive amount of oil lost, maybe another member can chime in. But it is probably normal depending on how you drive. For a comparison, my 2001 Honda s2000 loses .2 quarts every 500-700 miles. I hit VTEC about once a week, but never in my life have I redlined. I drive 80-90 mph weekly on the highway. I usually shift before 5000 rpm. At 51,000 I would doubt that you have a leak. here is a link to an oil consumption thread.

I'll have a look through the links when I'm home! Guess it won't hurt trying a different oil if people are having problems with Mobil1!
I rarely vtec tbh, I drive to work and back everyday and never do then, only really if I'm out over the weekend and never redline.
Thanks for your help, really appreciate it

Always check oil before start. & you may want to try Castrol GTX high mileage (a personal choice) and change every 3k miles. If your using oil and not running hard, no since wasting money on synth oil. Also, check your rear main seal and be careful not to over fill thinking it will burn off, big mistake Good luck

To the OP, just top it up everytime you get gas. Its a good way to remember. AP1s burn oil especially with VTEC usage. Its normal, crappy but normal.

Mobil 1 cooks off more then any other oil due to its particular composition and additives, run a different oil like castrol and you will see your oil usage cut in half or better.
