Default Loud Squeak While Shifting

Hey guys. Searched around all over the forums and couldn't find a thread that had the exact same noise I am hearing.

History about the car:
04 ap2
72K miles
No engine mods other than intake
Otherwise bone stock

Just moved from the northwest to Vegas a few weeks ago. Temps have been around 110F during the day.

What I am experiencing:
I have noticed this ridiculously loud squeak noise three times now this week. The noise is loud and sounds exactly like a cop's siren when they bleep their horn like they are getting ready to talk into it. Lol idk how else to describe it. The first time I heard the noise I thought I was about to get pulled over and was checking in my rear view mirror for a cop. The first two times I heard the noise I was on the highway, once while merging on and once while in stop and go traffic. I wasn't sure if the noise was coming from my car until tonight when I heard it a third time. I was starting from a stop sign and taking a left turn. The noise came directly from where the stick goes into the transmission and happened right when I shifted from first to second. I was driving slow and probably shifted around 3K RMPs. The noise is definitely not coming from the clutch as the clutch was completely down to the floor. Any ideas as to what this could be? I changed my tranny fluid less than a year ago with honda MTF and have since put less than 7K miles on it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Check the tranny fluid level. Maybe a nice time to change fluid.

if the tranny fluid was low wouldn't I hear it in the higher gears though? Not when shifting from first to second? And the way to check it is just by taking the fill bolt out?

Seen low tranny oil have many different symptoms. Depends on car. Yes, take out plug on side of tranny case. 17mm hex head bolt. You should be able to feel the oil inside the case with car level.

IHMO, you should rule-out low oil or burnt oil, first. Before proceeding.

FWIW... the drain bolt is 3/8-inch square socket drive size.

Although it may seem like the sound is coming from the transmission, that kind of sound you described may be the serpentine slipping on something. Take a look. If it needs replacement use OEM. (Lots of posts by Billman on why) I wonder if your belt tensioner is stiff. It may rotate for slower acceleration but can't make a rapid change. Try having someone rev the engine while you look to see if you can duplicate the sound.

Cosmo, good point. There is a wear guide marker on the pulleys. Can check this and see if belt is stretched past limits.

I will check the fluid level and serpentine belt sometime this morning.

Is there any possibility that the sound could be related to the hot temperatures out here in Vegas right now? It's unusual that it started right when the car got out here. Since getting here the car has only been driven like 40 miles tops and it was trailered down.

I suppose, it the tranny sprung a leak --- you have less fluid for lubrication. May have happened during transit?

Yeah I'm going to go check to make sure there isn't any leaks and the fluid is up to the top.

One more question before I go look:
Is the A/C compressor driven off of the serpentine belt? If it was seizing up temporarily couldn't it cause a loud temporary squeak?

Yes and yes. Any frozen pulley or pump driven by belt ---> loud squeaking noises.

Good luck!
