Default low clutch fluid

i found the clutch pedal to have a lot more free play today. i checked the clutch fluid reservoir and found the fluid to be almost empty. what could have caused this other than leakage in the system. would hard driving cause more fluid loss? after i topped the reservoir, the free play went away. any suggestions about anything else need to be done? thanx in advance

Either the master or slave cylinder is leaking fluid. You need to ID which one is leaking and replace it.

It's possible that the bleed valve on the slave cylinder wasn't properly tightened when the clutch was last bled. You might check that first.

i checked both master cylinder and slave cylinder, but could not find any evidence of leakage. can clutch fluid be consumed by some components??

If the bleed screw is loose, it would be on the slave cylinder.

It's also possible for the seals in each cylinder to no longer seal, and not leak any fluid, but the fluid level in the reservoir would remain the same

Your clutch fluid is most likely in your interior carpet. Take a look under the dash, at the back of the master, see if you see one drip sitting there waiting. I see this alot, from not changing the clutch fluid. I have found also that changing the fluid can stop the leak. The piston is riding on top of debris inside the master, taking fluid with it to the interior side.
