I added distilled water to my OEM battery a while back. I think the plates inside the battery must be completely submerged. It wasn't giving me any problems, I had just noticed the indicator had turned red. When I was adding water I noticed the plates inside the battery were about 1/4 inch exposed to air. So i added water until the plates were about 1/4 inch under the water level. I don't know about other years but on my 03 The indicator glass itself has a coin type screwdriver slot on it and is removed to add water. You unscrew the thing that changes color with a nickel or penny (I may have actually used a screwdriver, don't remember) it's actually the plug. My OEM battery is going three years in December and seems same as new (knocks wood). As for how much distilled water to add or even if this the correct procedure I have no idea. I just saw the little indicator that had turned red, it said distilled water, so I added a little. Oh and I think it took a little while before the little plug/indicator turned blue again.
