Default Maintenance Required light flashing.

While driving yesterday I noticed the maintenance required light was flashing for a few seconds and then went away. Then at start up after I got off work the light flashed again and went away. The car has almost 112k miles on it. I haven't changed the oil since I got it about a month ago. The mechanic said the oil was still good then. I will check the color of the oil and probably get an oil change but what else could cause the light to go off?

What engine oil/ weight should I use?

Thanks.

Maintenance required light means the car thinks it's time for you to change the oil.. but it's based off the last time you reset the light, not on the actual quality of the oil in the engine. It doesn't go off in 7500 mile intervals either.
