Default Major Oil Leak !

Hi Guys,

As some of you may know I've just replaced the complete shortblock in my car after a cylinder 4 failure.

I finnished the job yesterday and couldn't believe it when the car started first time. This was a very short lived excitment as after only a few seconds the car had dumped the best part of 5 liters of fresh oil all over the garage. I hope I switched it off in time before any damage was done.

The oil seems to be comming from the oil filter/ oil cooler area but at the moment I can't see exactly where.

It's a new filter and the cooler came fitted with the short block, does anyone know what may have happened? Did I forget something?

Has anyone else has seen or heard of this? Help would be much appreciated.

Kevin

may be you need to tighten the bolt holding the factory oil cooler

Either the filter or cooler isn't tight, the o-ring behind the cooler is misplaced, or the filter is double gasketed.

The Oil presssure switch is above the filter, I'd make sure the leak isn't from there as well.

That is one of my guesses, I din't check it, I assumed it would have been tightened at the factory !

I'll remove the filter and check it.

It's not from the pressure sensor, VTEC controller or Cam chain tensioner, as the oil is leaking further down the block. I can only assume it's the oil filter or cooler that is responsible as there are no other sources of oil in that position.

Also the amount of oil lost in that time must indicate a very large leak.
