Default Mr. Clean clean?

sup s2ki fam,

I was looking at the underbody chassis and rear suspension of my car, and it looks like the previous owner did some off-road type racing! There is a caked-on layer of dirt on the rear wheel wells and suspension components. It is a b*tch to remove! Any tips to remove the dirt and protect the suspension components and underbody chassis once clean? I'm keeping the S forever, so just trying to "keep it clean though!" Thanks in advance! peace

If he frequently drove on an unpaved road or a road with lots of dirt/sludge, it's easy to pick up layers of mud over time. Years ago I worked at a steel mill that had to spray down the roads to minimize the dust that was kicked up (minimize airborne particulates). The sludge would cake on the underside and wheel wells several inches thick on any car I drove to work. Occasionally I'd go over some railroad tracks or a pothole, dislodging big slabs of dried mud. The cars on the road behind me weren't too happy.

That stuff was a royal beatch to remove. You literally had to chisel it off. Fortunately I just drove junkers to work, so I didn't care.

You may be able to keep wetting it over hours, then try scraping it off. It's sort of like removing wallpaper.

A bunch of the Porsche guys have been using a product called Xenit Citrus Cleaner to get the built up sludge out of their wheel wells with great results. I'll probably be trying it out myself once I find the time.
