If you dress up the cut as I described above, you won't be able to tell *too much* that the hood was deliberately cut.

I agree. Many people have looked under my hood to look at the engine bay, and not one has noticed the cut without me pointing it out. It SOUNDS horrible that you have to cut the underside of the hood, but IMO it really isn't a big deal. If you dress the cut with some rubber or plastic trim (which I haven't done yet), I'm sure it would be even less conspicuous.

Sorry for going off topic.
Just thought I'd resurrect this thread as it proved very useful to me when I installed my Mugen CAI yesterday. Thanks bmarshall (and others) for the excellent detailed info - it helped a lot.
Some observations of my own:
Some observations of my own:
- If you're not going to remove the front bumper (fender) to remove the air guide then don't bother putting the rubber trim around the front until after you've removed the guide completely. Despite having thin enough hands to remove the 4 clips underneath the bumper, I managed to pull the rubber trim off several times just removing the 4 clips.
- The Mugen cutout suggestion is about 1cm too short on the left (driver side on RHD car). I needed to extend the cut by this amount to get the bonnet to close properly.
- If using a Dremel or equivalent (the only way really) then make sure you use the fibreglass reinforced cutting disc. Myself and the person helping me managed to go through 6 of the normal "heavy duty" discs and had to make an impromptu journey to the local hardware store to buy more discs. Once we had bought a packet of reinforced ones, the entire rest of the cut was made using a single disc.
- You really need 2 people to actually fit the intake - one to manuoerve it into place and the other to push the air guide back and hold the bonnet catch locking mechanism away. I can't see how it would be possible with one person without damaging something.
