Default My Cat and O2 sensor problems.

Hi. The night I got my Vortech Supercharger in, I was out and about driving and having fun. I noticed that after 30 minutes of driving, a check engine light turned on. Eventually I had it checked out by a scan tool and it said something about my secondary 02 sensor heater wire (?). I went to SOW on Friday, car ran fine with 0 problems (knock on wood). Turned the car on the next day and noticed a rattling coming from under the car. Lifted and put my head under and noticed it was coming from the cat. I figured thats where the check engine light came in. So I took out my cat and disconnected the 02 sensor only to find out that the head of the 02 sensor had broken off. Not only that, but the piece that has holes in it (dont ask me what it's called) thats shaped almost like a cone but not really, was smashed as if it was hit by a hammer. So anyone know what the cause of this is? I know I'll be getting a new 02 sensor but will I be needeing a new cat? Will this happen again and is there something better out there that I can get in place of OEM? Thanks in advance.

There are 2 catalytic cores in the cat. One of them has come loose and is banging into your secondary O2 sensor. The car will continue to run fine with a broken Secondary O2 sensor but the CEL will stay lit up. If you put a new O2 sensor into your current cat the new sensor will meet the same fate as the previous sensor. If you install a new cat and a new sensor the same thing will happen again.

Did you find the pieces, or are they somewhere in your exhaust? You could just replace the secondary O2 sensor with a simulator. It won't have any effect on performance, but it will prevent the CEL.

sounds like you melted your cat. With an FMU setup with your sc your car is most likely running rich. You most likely shot a nice little flame an melted part of your cat. Did the same thing in my friends blown LT 1

Gernby, Where can I get a simulator? Might as well get a test-pipe too.

Thanks, DavePK!

Actually, before tuning his car was running overly lean (he also developed the O2 problem at this time). However, since lean mixtures generate high exhaust temps, that could also be a problem.
