Default MY04 + filter on a stick

Hi, I am shopping for intakes at the moment and I have decided to go for filter on a stick type ones due to the price of induction boxes and the fact that they have performance gains even if its almost not noticable, and the sound too.

I know this topic has been covered like 1000 times, but it seemed almost impossible to get all the informations I wanted at once so I gave up after page 8 of the results.

First of all, I want to keep my car stock and unharmed, at least for now, since I only had it for 1500 miles. I heard that AEM v2 and Injen one requires trimming of plastic panel and I couldn't find out whether Injen one fits onto MY04.

I guess that leaves me to Comptech and K&N. I know that they both fit onto MY04, but I heard that the Comptech one requires removal of some 'horn' for 02+ models? Does the K&N one require any cutting/drilling? The pipe looked smaller compared to Injen and AEM so I am thinking that it doesn't.

As for hydrolocking problems, is K&N intake as safe as AEM or Injen? I don't plan on driving my car in rain or snow, or anywhere near water so hyrolock-wise, I don't really need the safety of Comptech intakes.

Do all 4 of them sound similar with Comptech one being not as loud as the rest?

Thanks.

I'm on the same boat as you.

I had the comptech on my 00 and was not impressed and it cost too much.

I'm also looking into the K&N but have not seen a pics of it yet.

Someone help us out here.

i have the PRM racing intake on my 04 - and am very happy with it. no hydrolock issues or cutting required...nice growl too it - throttle response seems to be a little better. that's about it - i got it more for the sound than for anything else...

here's a pic of the intake installed - let me know if you need any add'l info. you can buy this from the S2KI Marketplace...

Thanks, I remember seeing the PRM intake but I completely forgot about it.

Thats the picture of k&n intake. You can get it in silver, red, blue and polished for the pipe finish I think. 7.8hp increase and 6.3lbs in weight according to them. Fits on to MY04 without cutting/drilling etc. That is definately one of the choices.

PRM looks kinda funny, like a trumpet installed into your engine bay. But then I guess filter on a stick look like a woman's toy so I guess I can't say anything. Have you dyno'd your car yet? Sorry if I sound like a dynowhore but I'm just curious ;-/ and how much did it weigh?

I guess I'll drop Comptech from list. It seems like I'm just paying for the cosmectics and the name. It also requires relocation of alarm horns and damaging the foam on the A/C line.

Does Invidia or T1R exhaust require any cutting/welding/bending? How much does the labor cost?

dude seriously, get the V2. cmon, trimming the plastic is no big deal, if your that much of a fanatic, just replace the lower sheilds and fender liner before you sell it. otherwise, if you trim carefully it looks sick, and no other intake will make the power or the sound of the V2. i promise youll get no better bang for the buck than the V2, that is until iceman gets the intake finished for our cars. hehe, laters dave

Looking at that K&N dyno; an '04 put down only 191whp stock? That doesn't seem right. BTW, they have another intake with an airbox similar to the Comptech. It's an FIPK and is around $250.

yep - prm does look funny indeed...but easy access to the filter for cleaning and i just sorta like the way it looks.

plus it hums like a tuning fork...if you are sitting at a light with the top down and the radio off you can hear it doing it's thing. and it is pretty damn loud in the low rpms at WOT and crazy in vtec range - especially for the passenger since it's right in front of their feet.

i haven't dynoed my car - and most likely won't. not really my thing -- any mods i do will be for appearance and/or sound, etc. hell, i have a whole trunk full of stereo equipment that probably weighs 50-60 lbs...i'm not looking for a qtr. mile beast. plus i don't autocross either -- although i have great respect for those who do -- it's just not my thing...

Let's compare the two graphs, are you telling me that a 2000 S2K (arguably in stock form having the lowest power output) puts down 215hp while the 2004 puts down 190hp?? (This is comparing their short ram and their FPIK dyno graphs)

Now in each test there was a 12degree swing in temperature, but only in the FPIK dyno, where the stock had the lower temperature, was the SAE changed. I can't calculate the correct SAE factors since they did not list the vapor pressure on the sheet.

I would say not to trust these sheets until a member backs them up on the dyno. Also, remember neither of the K&Ns claims are for peak power, mostly they are just smoothing out the VTEC point at 6K.

This is the other K&N intake and I like it a lot.

I haven't heard anybody talk about it yet but would be interested in hearing reviews about it.

If I was to get an intake this is the one I would go for.

Here is the pic:
