Default no break in oil...no problem?

My 02 is 3 months old w/ 5000 miles. At 2300 miles I had my first oil change because I was about
to take a 2000 mile road trip. I had always heard that it is good to have the first oil change come
early anyway to remove any metal filings in the oil from the engine break in period. The dealership
didn't tell me there was anything wrong w/ changing the oil this early. So yesterday, I called First Texas
Honda in Austin, TX arrange for an oil change and the guy tells me that the first oil change for the S2000
is at 7500 miles and that the factory oil contains a special additive (i guess for break in purposes).
He seemed upset that I had the oil changed at 2300miles and told me to wait until 7500 to change it again.
I have not looked at my S2000 book lately, but I thought the first recommended change was at 3750.

My questions are
(1) What damage could result from having your first oil change at 2300miles in an 02 S2000?
(2) Why is that additive important?
(3) Is it wise for me to wait until 7500miles for the next one (my current oil would have over 5000miles
on it by that time)?

Thanks.

The additive is important to help everything seal properly. 2300 miles is ok to change the oil but I would suggest the usual 3k mile marker.

Damage? None...

If I remember my owners manual, 3,750 oil changes are for severe use. If you look closely at the definition for severe driving it covers both daily drivers and garage queens! I changed mine at 1,200 miles, before learning about the break in oil. I've got 28,000 miles now and no oil usage between 3,000 mile oil changes. I think you'll be ok.

I changed mine at a 1,000miles and I've been banging on the car pretty hard since. 22,000miles later (12,000 with a supercharger) and everything is still holding together. Around 13,000miles on the odo, the car stopped using Oil entirely.

While I don't recommend going against the owners manual, I wouldn't lose sleep over an early oil change.

1) There is a Molybendium additive in the break-in oil. Damage? Unlikely. See #2.

2) I'm afraid I cannot specify why its so important. But during break-in you are using a lot of oil, and the manual recommends putting in 10-30w. I be more worried about keeping the oil level up, than what additives are in the oil. If manual directs you to drop in retail Castrol without the Moly additive, its probablly not the end of the world to run without it.

3) If you drive the car hard, then change the oil once you reach the next scheduled 3500mile interval. Its what the owners manual recommends. It certainly won't hurt the car to change the oil early, it just might be more expensive because you are paying for an extra oil change.

I just recently dropped a brand new engine with zero miles on it in my car and I was trying to buy some break in oil additive. After some research I came to find out that the additive is nearly identical if not the exact same thing that Mugen sells as MT-105. I bought the MT 105 for my car and added it. You aren't hurting your car by changing the break in oil that soon, however it may take a little bit longer for your engine to properly seal, and it wouldn't have had enough time to get the "Extra" layer of lube around the engine parts that you would have gotten if you had just left it in there. I don't see why it would be too much of a performance or engine longevity issue, but if it bothers you that much then you can just buy MT 105 from King Motorsports and add it to any oil change.

I switched to Mobil 1 shortly after I go the turbo installed (when my car had something like 5500 miles on the odometer), only to discover the same thing and then worry over it. I did a bit of research and concluded that it's not worth losing sleep over. I stopped burning oil (I burned a quart or two in the first 5000 miles), shortly thereafter and I haven't burned any since.
