Noise from rear end
I know this is a pretty common problem among ap1's, and there has been alot of discussion on the matter, but I can't seem to find a duplicate of my problem.
on mild accel, I hear a LOUD metalic squeek, like a small oscillating chirp constant with speed, I can hear it from around 20 all the way up to 80 (then wind/exhaust noise gets too loud) when I put more than 20% throttle, or a moderate load on the motor, it goes away! same goes for WOT accel.
it is also there when i am under engine-braking, but the sound is a slightly different pitch. when I put in neutral and stop using only brakes, it is not there until I get to 30-35, and it is there again, but not nearly as loud as before.
I read that if there is the noise and no vibration under accel, spray penetrating oil on the splines, but that seemed to make the noise louder! Since there is no vibration anywhere, i don't think it is my CV going out, but the noise gets louder every time i drive the car.
Since I have found remanufactured axles for about $100, I might start there, but i don't want to go on an expensive troubleshooting adventure.
Is this sound like a wheel bearing?? and does anyone know what size the axle nut is on an 01? I am kinda afraid to drive it not knowing what is causing the noise, i will be upset if I loose a wheel on the freeway!! PLEASE HELP!!
edit: This started out as a clicking sound in 1st/reverse when applying gradual clutch to move from stopped.
